The core of the program is comprised of a series of team-taught modular courses focused on medical imaging platforms. You can customize the program to suit your specific career interests by choosing electives from the broad range of 400- and 500-level courses in Bioengineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemistry, Molecular/Cellular Biology, and Technology Entrepreneurship. Illinois offers a broad catalog of classes taught by world-leading faculty in their specific fields, enabling you to pursue in-depth training in topics that include biosensors, ultrasound imaging, advanced microscopy, nanoparticle contrast agents, and many more.

Coursework is complemented by many opportunities to interact closely with industry leaders and engineering managers through the Bioinstrumentation weekly seminar, a co-curricular (nongraded) workshop on leadership, and industry plant visits. Through these activities, you'll hear about the challenges and opportunities in Bioinstrumentation and the medical device industry through representatives of large companies, startup company founders, clinical practitioners, engineering team leaders, and business managers.

Upon completing the program, you'll be prepared for careers in the medical device industry that combine engineering and project management in a field that requires the skills to develop rapid technical innovation, meet rigorous regulatory requirements, and think globally in terms of product design and manufacturing.
